Canada Aims to Welcome up 431,645 New Permanent Residents in 2022

Canada announced its 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan on February 14. Over the next three years, the Canadian government intends to pursue ambitious immigration targets of over 1.3 million immigrants as follows.

  • 2022: 431,645 permanent residents
  • 2023: 447,055 permanent residents
  • 2024: 451,000 permanent residents

According to the 2022-2024 Immigration Levels Plan tabled today, close to 60% of all immigrants will arrive through economic class programs, including Express Entry and the Provincial Nominee Program as well as and the Temporary to Permanent Residence stream that was launched 2021.

The plan also supports family reunification and enables the government to meet its humanitarian objectives. Some 80,000 people are expected to come under the Spouses, Partners and Children programs, and 25,000 under the Parents and Grandparents (PGP) program.

Canada will also welcome over 80,000 immigrants under its humanitarian and refugee programs.

“Immigration has helped shape Canada into the country it is today. From farming and fishing to manufacturing, healthcare and the transportation sector, Canada relies on immigrants. We are focused on economic recovery, and immigration is the key to getting there.

Setting bold new immigration targets, as outlined in the 2022-2024 Levels Plan, will further help bring the immeasurable contribution of immigrants to our communities and across all sectors of the economy,” said Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Sean Fraser, in a press release.

In 2021, IRCC exceeded its target of 401,000 and welcomed over 405,000 new permanent residents.

While the plan is normally presented each year in November, the 2022 plan has been delayed due to the 2021 general election taking place at that time.
